Registration

Though Association was formed in 1950 and functioning since then, it could only be registered in the year 1955 through the combined efforts of Messers Badri Nath Kaul (who was roped in at that stage), Onkar Nath Sharma and Devi Singh Chauhan (all educated deaf) who drafted the Constitution and got Association registered.

Activities Launched

Some of the major mile-stones of Association's early formative era are:-

  • Inauguration of Library by Shri Gurmukh Nihal Singh, Speaker, Delhi Legislative Assembly on May 5, 1954 at 4775 Main Bazar, Paharganj, New Delhi.
  • Setting up of a toy manufacturing unit at the same place a few months later.
  • Allotment of two cycle stands in Connaught Place, New Delhi by New Delhi Municipal Committee at token licence fee of Rs.5 P.M. thanks to Mr. V.B. Basrurkar, a leading social worker, then Vice President of the said body and employment of Messers Onkar Nath Sharma and Devi Singh Chauhan both deaf who had cleared the compatative test for Lower Division Clerks but were denied appointment initially because of their deafness, again thanks to intervention of the self same Mr. Basrurkar who also made the civic body employ another deaf, Shri Saroj Kumar as Painter.

Mime Movement

Association will be remembered for long as the harbinger of Mime Movement in India. It not only perfected mime, gave it sophistication and made it the media of full length drama - as against short skits, but also popularized and propagated it across the country. Its Mime troupe visited different parts of the country and staged mime shows titled Mumu based on the story by Chokhev there. These performances were highly acclaimed.
