Present Activities - Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation Services
Rehabilitation of the deaf in gainful employment is the primary objective of the Association. From its inception, it has been active in this field. However, the real impetus was received in the post 1985 period when a proper office, with paid staff, with several dedicated workers like late Mr. Narendra Sinha putting in long hours voluntarily, started working.

The emphasis is on finding job suitable for the deaf as per their qualifications and work experience. 'Wanted' columns in News Papers are scanned, vacancies suitable for the deaf, waiting to be rehabilitated are identified and their candidature sponsored. Major companies, employing large work force, are also routinely approached.

Liaison is also maintained with Vocational Rehabilitation Centres for the Physically Handicapped and Special Employment Exchange for Physically Handicapped.

Results have been encouraging and over a hundred deaf have been successfully rehabilitated. It is an on going process.

In the field of socio-economic rehabilitation Association has made its mark. It has helped several hundred of its members find gainful employment, over a dozen whom have won National Awards for the Best Disabled Employee.

Redressal of Personal Grievances of members & assistance when needed
As members are mostly illiterate and do not get support even from member of their own families, they come to Association, explain their grievance in sign language, petitions are drafted and matter is then taken up with the concerned authority like Municipal Corporation of Delhi (for House Tax etc.), Delhi Development Authority (for allotment of flats/plots/shops or payment of disputed dues etc.) and other Government Departments and civic bodies etc. Outstation members who come to seek help are also attended to on priority basis.

Cases of members have also been taken up with the Chief Commissioner For Persons with Disabilities, and justice obtained for them.

Help in admission for wards in schools, sanction of scholarships, grant of fee concession etc. is also given.

Recreation
Facilities for healthy recreation (indoor-outdoor) have been provided. Also Holiday camps at Hill Stations and educational tours are a regular feature of normal activities. Picnics. are regularly organized.
